Jack teetered on the edge of consciousness, on the edge of death. He held the wall to steady himself and fight off the darkness. "Hold on now . . . clear it out . . . take a breath." Jack mumbled, shaking his head, and inhaled deeply. He dragged his hand across the bricks, watched the blood-red hand print run across the wall from a heavy wash of red to a faltering smear…

Chapters 7 through 13

In a tremendous landscape of pure darkness, where shadows have form, two black rippling figures argued over the unsubstantial image of Jack's body stretched atop three iron spears that skewered him at the points of his wounds. He dangled there lifeless, his mind teetering on the threshold of complete transition…

Episode III

Chapters 14 through 20

Throughout, Jack felt something, like eye's peering into

his soul. His skin began to tingle, as if tiny spiders ran up his spine. Someone was there, watching. Maybe waiting to strike, to attack him like before. Jack searched the crowd. "Where is he, who is he? Maybe he had even ordered this pitcher of beer."

Jack didn't see that person's face but he knew where at the bar to bring the full pitcher. "But what if the person attacks me when I'm unprepared?"…

Episode IV

Chapters 21 through 26

An instant before Ahrim's hands became a vise about her neck she kicked free and hurled herself out of the bed. "Jack what the hell is wrong with you?" she screamed. This was exactly Jack's worst fear come true.

Ahrim was right behind her out of the bed and caught hold of her night gown. He began to pull her back to him expecting her to resist. She didn't, she snatched the lamp off the night table and spun back in on him. The off-white ceramic shattered over his head and he fell back, momentarily delirious…

Episode V

Chapters 27 through 32

"You will not defy us." The stone floor beneath Jack's feet crumbled and fell away, yet he did not fall. His weight hung in the air as if tethered to the sky. The floor became a pit, at the bottom of which orange-white embers sparked and grew to towers of flames, licking and warming the soles of his feet. "Or you will suffer the fires…
